As your therapist, my role is to help you to create the life that you desire. My style is warm and direct, based in honesty and full of compassion. Initially, we'll spend time discussing the struggles that are bringing you to counseling. Then we can talk about how to experience relief and to create change in these areas. You may notice some immediate relief just from being able to express these thoughts and feelings in a safe and confidential environment. The long-term relief comes from acquiring a sense of mastery in those areas that were previously difficult, confusing, or scary. This happens step-by-step, as you integrate the ideas and perspectives that we cover in sessions.
Having a good therapeutic relationship can feel like having a solid anchor in your life: it's a place where you can bring questions about life, about yourself and others. You can discuss and work through confusing experiences, troubling feelings, and the challenges of life.
People have reported that through their work with me, they have been able to do the following:
- Experience life more fully
- Manage previously troublesome emotions
- Change their faulty or negative beliefs about themselves and their world
- Handle challenging situations with more power and clarity
- Finally create satisfying relationships
- Engage the world in a more effective manner
- Break old patterns and solidfy new, healthier patterns
- Feel differently about past hurts and traumas
- Feel comfortable in their own skin, at home with themselves
- Have compassion for themselves and their struggles
- Experience a sense of personal value
Sessions are typically forty-five minutes long, although some people opt for longer meetings. I offer sessions as long as sixty and seventy-five minutes as well. Most clients come weekly, some more or less often, depending on their circumstances and needs.
My fee begins at $135 for a forty-five minute session, and varies for longer sessions. Clients pay at the time of service. You may be able to obtain insurance reimbursement, depending on your specific plan and benefits. If you are currently unable to afford the entire fee and are committed to creating change in your life, please contact me to see if I have a reduced-fee opening available.
Couples Counseling/Family Therapy
Couples and families come in all shapes and sizes. I provide couples counseling to gay and heterosexual couples in committed relationships, to couples who are just beginning to date or who have been together for 30+ years. Couples counseling is a great opportunity to breathe new life into a strained relationship, or to create a solid foundation for a burgeoning relationship.
In a couples session, my goal is to form a strong alliance with both members in the couple, and to help each person articulate his or her wants, needs, and desires. We can then work on communication skills and conflict resolution, how to negotiate playfully and how to fight responsibly. We can look at how to increase intimacy, how to deal with financial issues, and overall how to create a more satisfying relationship.
I also do work with families as needed. I have helped people with general family communication, mending broken relationships, blended family issues, divorce transitions, and dealing with illness.
Clients have also used couples counseling when a relationship is ending to enable them to separate or divorce respectfully and amicably.
Group Therapy
I lead a weekly therapy group for men and women, where we focus on a variety of issues, including healing past trauma, increasing self-esteem, and improving the quality of interpersonal relationships.
Group therapy can be a very helpful way to implement the principles discussed during individual sessions. It can help to augment the therapy work by providing a relational laboratory where people can experiment with healthier ways of relating. Typically, a person will attend at least a few months of individual therapy before considering group work.
